Earwigs

Earwigs are insects found throughout the Americas, Africa, Eurasia, Australia, and New Zealand. Earwigs have characteristic cerci, with pincers forming like forceps on their abdomen, and membranous wings folded under short forewings. Even with their wings, they rarely use their flying abilities.

Earwigs are nocturnal, hiding in small crevices during the day and are active at night. They feed on a wide variety of insects and plants. This is why they are considered as pests to those who are growing plants and vegetables in their homes or are selling them in groceries. Though there is no evidence that they transmit disease, and are sometimes used to get rid of insects eating the foliage, there is still a debate on whether earwigs are really beneficial to crops. Earwigs eat both the insects eating the foliage like aphids and the foliage itself. The common earwig eats a variety of plants and a wide variety of foliage including leaves and petals. In severe cases, they can cause economic loss especially in agricultural areas.
